ISS Ham Radio Operations Status
Added by Jeremy Wright about 7 years ago
Aaron mentioned last night that some of the ISS ham equipment has been stowed or powered down. I got curious and checked it out.

I'll do some research on the Erikson radios and use that data for our link budget. As an alternative, do we want to retool for the S-band video?

Aaron, let's hold off on changing targets until the board/product owners have time to fully digest this news. Let's stick with the previous example for the link budget test to prevent churning on the deliverable for the link budget PBIs.

Not a problem. Will do.

After a cursory read through the links on that website, it seems like the ISS broadcasts are now only limited to large "pre-coordinated" events with schools or other groups. That's unfortunate.
The most recent contact was on 9 May 2016, with a middle/high school in the UK. Astronaut Tim Peak answered a dozen questions from an audience of about 200 students in the auditorium with about 1000 people listening in from their classrooms.
Short of scheduling an event with NASA, I am doubtful that we should continue to use the ISS HAM radio as the mission objective signal.

I would concur. That said, ISS is now putting out slow scan TV signals on 145.80MHz, and while this will be a large antenna, it is an easy one to build, and the software is a fairly straight shot from what J. was attempting with his validation build of the $30.00 ground station.
