Scanning Tunnelling Microscope: Partial assembly to check mechanical design
My friend Phil, who is a machinist, has the job of machining the holder for the piezotube and coarse positioner. Unfortunately the first one broke during the final machining, but I was able to glue it together and use it to check the design. Turns out I need to move a couple of holes anyway, so no big deal. Here's a shot of the holder, piezotube and coarse positioner temporarily assembled with the isolator stack:
Scanning Tunnelling Microscope: STM construction underway!
Here are the individual disks that make up the isolator stack. They are made from mild steel:
The disks are separated from each other by 5mm sections of viton, cut from an o-ring, and secured with
cyanoacrylate glue:

Open Design Engine: Another step closer to the public beta (20 comments)
Today we migrated ODE to its production server. I am sure we will have a few bugs to work through over the next week or so, but this is a significant step in the path toward launching the public beta. Thank you to School Factory and our volunteers who helped make this possible.

DMX Gizmo: Semi-Hold (2 comments)
So while I (Derek) am on the road, until mid-December at the least, probably very little will be happening. My other primary collaborator on this project is still settling in with a new job, so he probably won't be doing a lot for a while anyway. I'll try and get our various discussions and writings transferred over here at some point.
Right now the project isn't much of anything but ideas, but we're all really excited to carry it forward.
Open Design Engine: ODE v0.2 - Public Beta development to start in November (1 comment)
Our KickStarter campaign" was a success. We received $6237 in pledges from 166 backers, and heard many great ideas for future development. Thank you to everyone who backed us, shared the KickStarter link, and participated in the many discussions on and off line. We have already been in contact with our developers at Littlelines, and we will begin development on v0.2 - Public Beta in November. Keep an eye out here and on the KickStarter Updates Page for more news.
