v 1.0 Roadmap Evaluation of Aerodynamics Subsystem

Added by J. Simmons over 9 years ago

Please comment below on the 5 requirements from Choosing the technology branch for the v 1.0 roadmap regarding projects related to launch vehicle Aerodynamics. Feel free to brain storm potential projects related to this subsystem, evaluate any or all requirements, or otherwise comment on the suitability of this subsystem for the v 1.0 roadmap. Note, the end result should be group consensus on requirements score and any notes to include on the evaluation page in the wiki.

Would a wind tunnel be a piece of test equipment for this?

Sure, several would actually (different speeds and all that), as would CFD tools.

A wind tunnel seems like a pretty straight forwards project along the exact same lines as the rocket test stand. Are there special wind tunnels for rockets?

We have actually seen some examples of DIY wind tunnels, so yes I would agree that one or more wind tunnel projects could fit in nicely with our current scale of projects. I do not believe there are any special rocket wind tunnels, beyond just the eventual need for very high speed (read super and hyper sonic) tunnels.

I think we have some of the expertise to do wind tunnels and possibly some CFD depending on how involved Jason D. gets. So, I might got as high as a 3 for engineering expertise. But, I would want to list out more potential projects to see of there is enough depth that is within our reach to make this a viable project area for a longer term roadmap.
