v 1.0 Roadmap Evaluation of Propulsion Subsystem

Added by J. Simmons over 9 years ago

Please comment below on the 5 requirements from Choosing the technology branch for the v 1.0 roadmap regarding projects related to launch vehicle Propulsion. Feel free to brain storm potential projects related to this subsystem, evaluate any or all requirements, or otherwise comment on the suitability of this subsystem for the v 1.0 roadmap. Note, the end result should be group consensus on requirements score and any notes to include on the evaluation page in the wiki.

  • Engineering expertise: 4 - we have a number of folks (Greg, Aaron, myself) with some interest/background in propulsion plus enough structures folks (Matt, Jeremy, etc) that I think we could do a nice long series of test stands, small propulsions systems, etc
  • Fabrication: 4 - same basic details as above, and I am hopeful that electronics for test hardware could mostly be surface mount so that most of us can do any required soldering
  • Mission: 5 - propulsion is a key technology to any launch system, expanding our own (and other's) capabilities with respect to propulsion is an essential step in becoming a spacefaring civilization (besides, tackling propulsion early on is a long standing tradition in space development firms)
  • Income: ? - I really want to believe there are educational opportunities for kits from test stands and other propulsion related projects, but I am not experienced in the kind of market analysis required to make a good estimate
  • Admin: 3 - so, it looks like we can clearly steer away from ITAR just by limiting the scale and application of our projects to model rockets (including high powered ones), but insurance still looks tricky...

@Matt M. - can you clarify this entry (staging hobby and high-powered rocket motors) from the Propulsion Card Storming page?
